Movie review: Appaloosa

Appaloosa is a new western starring Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen. They play two law men for hire. They are brought into the town of Appaloosa to help bring in a man named Bragg, played by Jeremy Irons. Bragg murdered the Town Marshall and two of his deputies but the people of the town are too afraid to try and do anything about it.

The love interest of the movie is played by Renee Zelwegger. There isn't much romance to speak of as Ed Harris and Renee seem to fall for each other pretty quick. But the love story isn't the main focus of the movie.

As for the performances they are pretty good all around. This is the best I've seen from Ed Harris in a while and Viggo is his usual good self. It is very good to see Jeremy Irons in a good role since he has done so much crap lately. As far as Zelwegger I've seen a lot better from her in the past. One thing that she does a lot is if you watch her she scrunches up her face. In some of her movies she doesn't do this a lot but she does this so much in this movie after a while you get tired of it.

One thing you come to expect from a western is a lot of shooting. This movie really isn't a gun fight type of western. This is more of a character movie and the shooting is pretty limited. But the characters are interesting enough that you don't really mind the lack of violence. It's kind of funny that the big gun fight in the movie is over pretty quickly.

Now the movie does seem to jump around a little bit. It's not that it gets confusing or anything but the events in the movie go by pretty quickly. I think this could be from the fact that the movie is directed by Ed Harris and he doesn't have a lot of experience behind the camera. But I will say for a first movie he did a pretty good job.

It has a good western feel and the costumes and locations look very authentic. I don't this movie will go down in history as the best western ever made but it's still a good western in its own right.

My score: 7.5/10
